Agenda Item Summary: Alexandria City Public Schools has focused on supporting our students’ social, emotional, and academic learning through the multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). MTSS is the structure used to teach students behavioral, social emotional and academic learning at the universal tier 1 level. Tiers 2 and 3 of MTSS are used to address the more intensive needs with data-informed and targeted interventions and supports. Through behavioral, social, emotional, and academic learning (SEAL), interventions and supports, students gain the skills needed to be successful at school and beyond. The Departments of Student Services and Equity and Teaching, Learning and Leadership have increased collaboration to support staff and students in meeting SEAL needs.
Background: ACPS schools utilize multidisciplinary teams as a proactive strategy to support student needs in the current learning environment. All schools focus on SEAL using the MTSS framework. In addition to the tier 1 instruction provided in the classroom, each school has a student support team composed of school counselors, school nurses, school psychologists, and school social workers to address social emotional barriers, access basic needs, or health and wellness concerns that may be impacting a student’s academic performance.
Recommendation: The Interim Superintendent recommends the School Board review the presentation for an understanding of MTSS for the 2022-2023 school year.
