Agenda Item Summary: The Scope of Work identifies the key focus areas and related tasks for the Special Education Advisory Committee during this school year. These tasks will provide advice regarding intervention and supports for students, parents, administrators, and faculty to achieve effective outcomes for students with disabilities. The plan provides descriptions of the activities and planned implementation schedule which will be utilized to achieve the committee’s goals.
Background: School Board Policy BFC establishes a Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC). The committee is charged with providing advice to the Board regarding the provision of special education services to students with disabilities served by Alexandria City Public Schools. According to state regulations, the functions of the local advisory committee shall be as follows:

a. Advise the local school division of needs in the education of children with disabilities;

b. Participate in the development of priorities and strategies for meeting the identified needs of children with disabilities;

c. Submit periodic reports and recommendations regarding the education of children with disabilities to the division superintendent for transmission to the local school board;

d. Assist the local school division in interpreting plans to the community for meeting the special needs of children with disabilities for educational services;

e. Review the policies and procedures for the provision of special education and related services prior to submission to the local school board; and

f. Participate in the review of the local school division's annual plan.

This document was developed to implement a scope of work designed to achieve the committee’s goals.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends approval of the Special Education Advisory Committee’s Scope of Work.
