Agenda Item Summary: The attached presentation will provide School Board members with an overview of both the federal and Commonwealth requirements driving special education services for students with disabilities. Additionally, it will illuminate how Alexandria City Public Schools implements services in accordance with these regulations. The Special Education Advisory Committee will share the parent perspective as to the services and needs of families.
Background: The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) work plan emphasizes outreach and communication. The SEAC members recognize the importance of an informed population regarding the issues affecting students with disabilities. This presentation is designed to provide board members with information regarding: the requirements mandated by special education legislation, the implications for practice in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), and the parent perspectives regarding programming for students with disabilities.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends that the School Board review the information within the attached presentation.
