Agenda Item Summary:
|
On June 20, 2019, the Virginia Board of Education adopted the Proposed Revised 2018 Science Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework for public schools in Virginia. Full implementation occurred during the 2022-2023 academic year with state testing beginning in Spring 2023. To support the 2018 Science Standards of Learning instruction, a committee reviewed elementary science textbooks and hands-on learning materials for quality and alignment.
|
Background:
|
The elementary science Textbook Selection Committee (TSC) included members with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences. An instructional staff member from each school was invited to represent their school. School-based instructional staff members included classroom teachers, reading specialists, technology integration specialists, science interventionists, science instructional coaches, STEM specialists, and assistant principals. In addition, instructional specialists from the Offices of Specialized Instruction, English Learners, Talented and Gifted (TAG) Programs, and Technology Services all participated as members of the committee. The TSC carefully compared the materials submitted by vendors with the ACPS elementary science curriculum to identify topics addressed within each text.
The TSC used the following criteria when reviewing instructional materials:
● Alignment with the Virginia SOL at the content and cognitive level of the standards
● Quality of Science content, as presented in student materials and instructional guidance
● Quality of integration of Scientific and Engineering Practices to support conceptual learning.
● Quality of Clever and Canvas integration as well as digital resources and teaching materials
● Whether materials are culturally sensitive and support the diverse learners in ACPS
The TSC reviewed the following publishers’ textbooks for possible use with the Elementary Science program: School Specialty, Museum of Learning, Discovery Education, Accelerate Learning, Learning A-Z, and Five Ponds Press.
The TSC sought additional feedback from school-based staff through individual and collaborative reviews and a teacher survey. Based on the discussions and feedback regarding alignment with the Virginia SOL and the other identified criteria, specific resources were recommended to support diverse needs. Please see the complete list of titles by grade level or, where applicable, program.
