Agenda Item Summary: The School Nutrition Services (SNS) team for Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is represented by over 115 well-trained professionals. SNS provides high-quality, nutritionally balanced and affordable meals to more than 15,800 students daily across the division. Our meal programs and service models include, but are not limited to, breakfast and lunch programs at all school locations, after school snack and dinner programs, non-pricing Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) in select schools, Free and Reduced Meal (FARM) benefits, and a variety of additional programs that encourage student choice, creates opportunities for nutritional exposure, and assisting in student academic performance and achievement in the classroom.
Background: In alignment with Federal, State and School Board Health and Wellness policies, it is the responsibility of SNS to cultivate the nutritional well being of all ACPS students. Our daily focus is to remove barriers to food accessibility, encourage student engagement within various meal programs, increase nutritional literacy, and bring awareness to the benefits of healthy food choices.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends that the School Board review the information provided in this board packet.
