Agenda Item Summary: This memo aims to provide the School Board with the updated Local Plan for the Gifted. The Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Local Plan for the Gifted was revised over the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years via the work of three steering group committees: school-based and central-off-based administrators; central office staff and school-based instructors; and parents and community members. The steering committees aligned its updates with gifted research, ACPS data, and Alexandria City Public Schools' (ACPS) strategic mission, goals, and budget priorities. As a result, any changes from the previous Local Plan will use a phased-in approach to implementation beginning the 2023-2024 school year. Through this brief, the steering committee and the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership ask for discussion and approval from the School Board on the updated Local Plan for the Gifted.
Background: Our top priority for the 2022–2023 school year is to present the revised Local Plan for the Gifted to School Board with approval in May 2023. The work on the Local Plan has included multiple steering committees to guide goals and actions for the plan. The steering committee members include school administrators from the elementary and secondary levels, central office administrators, central office curriculum specialists, TAG designees, TAG teachers, classroom teachers, parents, and community members. In addition, the TAG office has worked closely with the Policy Revision Team and the Equity Policy Review Committee to align policy and equitable practices with the updated Local Plan for the Gifted. As a division and committee that needs to prioritize equity, we must take courageous steps to ensure we use culturally, linguistically, and economically unbiased identification procedures and instructional services. This plan sets a pathway for these changes
Recommendation: The Interim Superintendent recommends that the School Board approve the updated Local Plan for the Gifted.
