Agenda Item Summary: The Department of Facilities and Operations, Office of Safety and Security Services, is providing a final update on the weapons abatement pilot program.
Background: ● The School Board approved the implementation of a weapons abatement pilot program in March 2023 ● The pilot program began in all secondary locations in May 2023 ● An update was provided to the School Board on the weapons abatement pilot program on February 22, 2024 ● A stakeholder survey on the weapons abatement pilot program was opened on April 5, 2024 and closed on April 28, 2024 ● Survey results and final recommendations on the future of the weapons abatement pilot program was presented to the School Board on May 23, 2024 ● School Board vote requested on June 20, 2024 to remove program from “pilot status” so program can become a formal part of security posture at secondary schools
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends that the School Board review staff recommendations again and to vote on removing the weapons abatement program from “pilot” status so the program can become a formal part of the security posture at secondary schools. Madam Chair, I move that the Board adopt the weapons abatement pilot program on a permanent basis provided that the Superintendent provides the Board with updates on the efficacy of this program at least once per school year.
