Agenda Item Summary: On March 18, 2021, the School Board formed the Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee in an effort assess the processes, goals and support required by its advisory committees to keep them functioning and thriving. Board Members Michelle Rief, Heather Thornton, Jacinta Greene and Margaret Lorber were appointed to serve on this committee through December 31, 2021.

The Chair recommends the following Board Members for appointment to the Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee to continue this important work. They are:
• Abdel-Rahman Elnoubi
• Michelle Rief
• Ashley Simpson Baird
Background: These advisory committees are made up of parents, community members, staff and students, that support the work of the Division. These committees meet throughout the school year and each provides a Scope of Work and Annual Report as well as provide expertise, facilitate community input, and utilize multiple sources of information to advise the Board on areas for continued growth and improvement. The School Board benefits from its partnerships with the community, particularly the experience and insight provided by its volunteer committees. After receiving feedback from advisory committee chairs, it was determined that the Board could better support the work of its advisory committees. In March of 2021, the Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee was formed.

In the fall of 2021, School Board Advisory Committee Chairs were invited to meet with the School Board to give feedback on their experiences with their advisory committee as well as to inform the Board on their work. A survey was also sent out to current and former advisory committee members for their opinions on the advisory committee work and engagement. After hearing feedback and suggestions, the Ad Hoc Committee presented a report in December 2021 that laid out the following recommendations for the School Board:
• Increase two-way communication between the School Board and advisory committees
• Improve the orientation process for advisory committee members
• Delineate administrative responsibilities for advisory committees
• School Board Members need to assist in the recruitment of advisory committee members
• Revive the School Health Advisory Board (SHAB)
• The School Board should advocate at the state level for advisory committees to meet virtually
• Reconstitute the Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee with the on-coming Board
Recommendation: The Board Chair recommends the School Board appoint Board Members Abdel-Rahman Elnoubi, Michelle Rief and Ashley Simpson Baird to the Ad Hoc School Board Advisory Support Committee.
