Agenda Item Summary: The Calendar Committee recommended revisions from the March 2, 2023 Board presentation are as follows: • Maintain parent-teacher conference framework as originally approved on December 16, 2021. This conference schedule provides more time for conferences in the fall when meeting with families is most critical. Fall conferences take place over two non-instructional days. Winter conferences will occur on two early release student days. • Move the traditional calendar fall elementary full conference day from Thursday, November 2 to Monday, November 6. This prevents an isolated school day, where the students report to school for one day bracketed by non-attendance days. • Align traditional calendar elementary, middle and high school winter conferences and place on Thursday and Friday, February 15 and 16, to pair with the February 19, 2024 Presidents’ Day holiday • August 16 becomes a division-wide professional learning day at Samuel Tucker Elementary School in order to align with division-wide professional development no longer scheduled on August 18, 2023 • August 18 becomes a student attendance day at Samuel Tucker The remainder of the proposed revisions presented on March 2, 2023 remain intact: ● August 31 and October 12 become student attendance days ● The last day of school for students becomes Wednesday, June 12, 2024 ● August 18 becomes a school-based professional development day ● August 17 becomes a division-wide professional development day ● July 25 is confirmed as the first day of school at Samuel Tucker
Background: The 2023-24 Academic Calendar was approved by the ACPS School Board on December 16, 2021. Revisions necessary to correct two student attendance days were presented to the Board on March 2, 2023. Based on the feedback from the Calendar Committee, there have been some revisions to the March 2, 2023 recommended calendar.
Recommendation: The Interim Superintendent recommends that the School Board review and approve the recommended revisions to the SY 2023-24 Academic Calendars.
