Agenda Item Summary: The conversion of 1703 N. Beauregard is currently in the Planning phase and will enter the Design phase later this Spring of 2022. Construction for conversion into a 400-student swing space is expected to begin in Spring/Summer 2023 and continue through Fall 2024. 1703 N. Beauregard is anticipated to serve as a swing space beginning in Fall 2024, subject to construction timelines and design progress for George Mason Elementary School. The building will be used as a swing space through Summer of 2029 and conversion of the swing space into a permanent school begins in Fall 2029. Attachment 1 provides a graphic timeline of the schedule for 1703. N. Beauregard.
Background: After the feasibility study presentation and discussions in June of 2021, the School Board decided that Swing Space is the most favorable option for the modernizations of George Mason Elementary School and Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology. The use of 1703 N. Beauregard as a swing space will allow for design flexibility, the preservation of existing open space on the sites, and avoid occupied construction sites. In September of 2021, the City approved the purchase of 1703 N. Beauregard for adaptive reuse of the existing office building into a school. In February 2022, ACPS closed on the purchase of the building. The FY2023-2032 Capital Improvement Plan includes $24.5 Million in FY23 for conversion of the building into a swing space for 400 elementary school students and $12.8 Million in FY30 for the conversion into a 600-student school.
Recommendation: The Superintendent recommends that the School Board review the milestone timeline.
