The current secondary science textbooks are not aligned with the new 2018 science Standards of Learning (SOL), the middle school science digital textbooks will no longer be offered by the publisher after this school year, and the AP science textbooks will fall out of compliance with the College Board’s rule on copyrights no more than 10 years old. Also, VDOE will be adopting new math standards in 2023.

Background:
|
Virginia adopted the new 2018 science Standards of Learning (SOL) that the state will assess during the school year 2022-2023. The textbooks ACPS teachers currently use for instruction are not aligned with the 2018 science SOLs. Also, the publisher of the middle school science textbooks, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, has indicated that they will no longer offer the current resource we use (Science Fusion) after this school year. Therefore, middle schools will require new textbooks and resources before the initially scheduled secondary science textbook adoption year of FY 2025.
Further, the College Board requires that AP textbooks and resources have a copyright no more than ten years old. Because all of the AP science textbooks from the previous textbook adoption have the copyright year of 2012 or 2013, they will all fall out of compliance prior to the original adoption year, FY 2025.
Originally, elementary mathematics was scheduled for adoption this year. K-5 math teachers received new supplemental resources in 2018 to support the 2016 math Standards of Learning instruction. Additionally, the VDOE will adopt new math standards in 2023 and be fully implemented in 2025. Therefore the recommendation is to wait for the new SOL approval before purchasing new resources for elementary mathematics.

The Superintendent recommends that the School Board review the attachment outlining the change in the textbook adoption schedule.
