Agenda Item Summary:
The current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Alexandria Police Department (APD expired at the end of October 2022. The current MOU is one of the items being reviewed by the School Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP) advisory group. No changes to the current MOU are being made at this time. The SLEP advisory group may recommend changes to the MOU as part of their overall recommendations to the School Board in December 2022/January 2023. To this end, we are recommending extending the current MOU with APD through the end of June 2023. This extension will allow time to account for any potential recommendations that may come from the SLEP advisory group process to be considered as well as completion of the public comment process related to the review and potential amendment of the MOU.
Background:
A MOU with the local law enforcement agency (APD) is required for divisions that have School Resource Officers (SROs) (per the Code of Virginia, 22.1-280.2:3). An extension to the current agreement will be needed to remain in compliance with this state requirement.
Recommendation
The Superintendent recommends that the School Board approve the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding to June 30, 2023 and authorize the agreement between ACPS and APD.
