Agenda Item Summary:
The purpose of this brief is to describe the leadership restructuring of the Athletics and Student Activities Office under Teaching, Learning, and Leadership. This restructuring is occurring to foster systemic alignment with division-wide initiatives and decisions that impact students involved in athletics and student activities. Furthermore, research shows that students involved in athletics and activities outside of school hours excel in social, emotional, and academic learning. The change will foster consistent communication in areas, including, but not limited to transportation, facilities, finance, health and safety protocols, security, and communication. This restructuring will realign work responsibilities of various offices presently overseeing athletics and student activities such as the middle school intramural programs and recreational fields/athletic spaces throughout ACPS and the city of Alexandria.

The current positions in the Athletics and Student Activities department have been reclassified to accommodate the additional responsibilities to support the restructuring effective
July 1, 2022. The restructuring requires no additional full-time employees (FTEs). However, the reclassification has changed the job titles of current staff and provided the additional compensation to accommodate their additional responsibilities. The current Director has been reclassified as the Executive Director; the current Assistant Director has been reclassified as the Director; and the current Coordinator has been reclassified as the Assistant Director.

Description and overview of the reclassified positions:
● The Executive Director of Athletics and Student Activities will provide administrative direction and oversight for all athletic and activity programs in all schools throughout the school division. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state and district regulations, administering departmental funds and accounts in a fiscally responsible manner and sustaining a culture of sportsmanship, professionalism and respect at all levels. The role will report to the Chief of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership.

● The Director of Athletics and Student Activities will provide day-to-day office management that ensures the planned activities, events, and varied tasks are occurring with the proper supports in place. This role will lead and manage the growth of sports and club programs at the secondary campuses. This position will report to the Executive Director of Athletics and Student Activities.

● The Assistant Director of Athletics and Student Activities – Operations will assist the Director with the day-to-day office management that ensures planned activities, events, and office tasks are occurring with the proper supports in place. This role will also oversee the Physical Education Department at Alexandria City High School. This position will report to the Director of Athletics and Student Activities.

Background:
This change will enhance communication and ensure systemic alignment for division-wide decisions regarding school closures, health and safety protocols, transportation, and other pertinent areas directly impacting athletics and student activities.
Recommendation
