Agenda Item Summary:
ACPS coordinates with multiple advisory committees to enhance educational programming. These committees, which are made up of members from Alexandria business and industry leaders provide advice to ACPS program staff, principals, and the school board. As part of The High School Project, ACPS is convening an Industry Advisory Board (IAB) that comprises leaders in industries, businesses, Higher Education, nonprofits and government institutions to provide input to the Educational Design Team on the types of educational programming necessary to prepare students for success in the 21st century. The IABs will be coordinated with and will reinforce the activities of the standing advisory boards. Members of the standing advisory boards are working with the Educational Design Team and will be recruited to serve on the IAB. |

Background:
The High School Project began in the summer of 2018 and has progressed steadily throughout the past year. On January 24, 2019, the School Board voted to continue high school project work with a focus on several priorities and a commitment to a multi-option evaluation process. On August 22, 2019, the School Board had a work session which focused on the Educational Design Team’s models of what a two high schools model or connected high school network could look like, as well as a preliminary discussion on the site analysis. The September 19, 2019 School Board Work Session focused on the detailed site analysis and cost comparison between two high schools model and connected high school network. On September 26, 2019, the School Board voted in favor of a Connected High School Network strategy to address Alexandria’s future high school capacity needs that included construction of a high school building (and associated site amenities) on the Minnie Howard campus for 1,600 students. |
