Agenda Item Summary:
Alexandria City Public Schools has a standing MOU with Alexandria City Police. The Office of Safety and Security (along with additional stakeholders) is in the process of reviewing the MOU in adherence with HB 292/SB 221 legislation. |
Background:
The HB 292 (Van Valkenburg) / SB 221 (Locke) legislation requires school boards to review MOU’s with local law enforcement agencies every two years (previous review frequency was every five years). The review process includes: • The MOU between ACPS and APD signed in 2018 will be reviewed by a joint ACPS/APD committee. • The committee will ensure the new MOU complies with recent Virginia law changes, where applicable. • The committee will share/publicize the current 2018 MOU and provide a survey to ensure the greater Alexandria community has the opportunity to provide feedback. • The release of the current MOU and survey starts the public comment period. The review period will last through October 31, 2020. • The committee will collect community input (via the survey) and a public hearing on October 1, 2020, and consider this feedback in the formulation of the updated MOU and/or any future addendums to the MOU. • The updated MOU will be shared with the School Board prior to its renewal. • The updated MOU must be renewed and signed by the Chief of Police and the Superintendent by November 2, 2020. |
